Big Bear Lake, California is a resort town just a short drive from Los Angeles or Orange County. Big Bear is at an elevation of 6700 feet, therefore the winters provide plenty of snow for skiing, snowboarding or sledding with young kids. The Fall is a great time for mild temperatures and fresh air, with many event that time of year, including their infamous Oktoberfest that is held every weekend from September through October. Spring is great for hiking and other outdoor activities, and with the beautiful lake, Summers are obviously an exceptional time to visit.
The question, aside from what time of year to visit, is wether to stay in a hotel or cabin. Big Bear has a big selection of hotels available for any budget, and is a good option for someone who is interested in staying in Big Bear to enjoy the social life in the Village. There are great restaurants, bars, and even a music venue in the Big Bear Village. I personally have stayed at the Robinhood Resort Hotel, as well as the Fireside Lodge and both were very comfortable and affordable. A cabin rental is a fantastic option if you are going with a large group with family or friends, and enjoy spending time together, with the use of a kitchen etc. Just like the Big Bear hotels, there are Big Bear cabin rentals for every budget. The size and location will make a difference. A cabin is usually going to offer more space and so this is probably a better option if you have a larger family and kids. I highly recommend staying near or on the lake if it’s in your budget, especially if visiting in the Summer. I have stayed at a lakeside cabin in Summer, and in Winter and both were nice.
